Eugene OR Feb 14 2013 The University of Oregon established a campus Police Department in 2012 but public safety officers are unarmed.
Now for the past few months there have been talks about arming their officers with firearms.
The first of several public discussions on the proposal is Monday.

When the U of O transitioned from a Department of Public Safety to a Police Department, the State Board of Higher Education asked it to wait to arm its officers.  University spokeswoman Julie Brown says the U of O is somewhat unique among large universities in not having armed officers.

Brown: "Most campuses our size or even a little bit smaller already have armed police departments on campus. So this discussion that we are having is happening much later than a lot of other campuses have had. All of the other PAC-12 Universities have armed police officers on their campuses full time."

Oregon State University contracts with Oregon State Police to provide armed public safety officers. The first public meeting on arming the U of O Police is tonight at 6 at the Global Scholars Hall on campus in Eugene.
