Brookfield, IL Oct 8 2012A 37-year-old former Riverside resident committed suicideFriday night by stepping in front of a freight train in Riverside, police said.
At 7:24 p.m., the man walked up onto the railroad tracks,assisted by a medical walker, turned his back toward the train and was struck,Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel said.
He was killed by the train on the foremost south track, eastof the Longcommon grade crossing, which is about a block from where hepreviously lived in Riversideuntil 2010, Weitzel said.
At the time of his death, the man — who had been since beenliving in North Aurora — had a “do notresuscitate” medical order in his pocket. There were several eyewitnesses tothe incident including young children that were at the grade crossing withtheir mother at the time, Weitzel said.
“It took officers nearly four hours to clear the grade crossingdue to the complexity of the investigation and the position of the body,”Weitzel said.
The railway reopened about 11:15 p.m. Friday.
