South Bend IN Nov 5 2012 The search is on for the person who fired shots at a Knightsof Columbus Hall in South Bendlate Saturday night.
Police told WSBT Sunday afternoon 20-year-old Demetrius Reidand 21-year-old Darius Burrell, both of South Bend, suffered gunshot wounds after a fight broke outduring a rap contest.
A security guard said an argument broke out between womenaround 11 p.m. People were screaming, and the fight got larger. As the securityguard was trying to push customers out the door, he saw someone outside theKnights of Columbus at 553 East Washington Street raise his arms above his head,bring his arms back down and point inside the building. That's when the guardheard 2 gunshots.
Police say Reid, who was found near the entrance door justinside the Knights of Columbus, was shot in the back, was in serious conditionand underwent surgery early Sunday at Memorial Hospital.However, Memorial officials told WSBT they did not have any information onReid, or at least would not say if Reid was being treated there.Burrell was shot in the arm and was treated and released. Hewas found on the 2nd floor of the building.
The security guard told police he saw a third victim, butthat third victim was never found.
The guard also said he never got a good look at the suspect,so police don't have much to go on in developing a description of the culprit.
Tina Bartz' nephew was in the talent show and said shedidn't hear the shots.
"No we didn't," Bartz said. "We were inside,and I guess somebody from outside shot inside is all I heard. And then, wecouldn't leave."
"It's sickening," is how Bartz described theincident.
Ayron Reynolds of Elkharthas strong feelings about it. "People don't need to be coming out heredoing that for no reason," Reynolds said. "It's upsetting toeverybody. We are just trying to support a good thing .. music."
Because it was a shooting, the St. Joseph County MetroHomicide Unit is investigating.
