Are plastic refill coffee mugs really helpful?

Plastic refillable mugs are often touted as environmentally friendly options to paper cups. Sure, you are using much fewer cups if you drink coffee often... but is this really more environmentally sound?

Paper cups are made from trees, which can be replanted. A paper cup would take no more than a year to decompse in a landfill.

Plastic mugs use petroleum. It takes 450 years for a plastic bottle to decompose. How long would a thick, dual-walled hard plastic mug take?

Both could be recycled, although many facilities do not accept them. Some Tim Hortons in Canada now have paper cup recycling bins.
